Buttons on websites that worked under previous versions of Firefox stopped working after upgrade to Firefox Quantum. (Note also that when upgrading, I started using sync feature.) Three examples examples are: (1) the Upload files button on dropbox.com - the browser takes no action after upgrade, whereas before upgrade a file explorer window opened to permit me to upload the file (note that "drag and drop" still works to upload a file to dropbox.com); (2) the Choose file button within the Electronic Case Filing system of the U.S. Courts system - again, nothing happens when I click this button, whereas before upgrade, a file explorer window opened to permit me to choose the PDF file that would be filed with the courts; and, (3) a download file link that appeared when accessing work email at portal.office365.com. I've had other problems, as most all download links have ceased working after the upgrade, but the the items above are specific ones where I can recite the details.

With Dropbox you may just need to reinstall with a updated version if it has a link in Firefox, I have never had one. Permissions have been taken away from Extensions.

For some unknown reason you were signed into sync which you actually need to click and enter your info and to wait for a confirmation email. What are you syncing with ? Maybe that was done on that device which activated when this was installed.

ok, for the websites that do not work Please : https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/export-firefox-bookmarks-to-backup-or-transfer and https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/back-and-restore-information-firefox-profiles then https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/refresh-firefox-reset-add-ons-and-settings TEST....... If no issues then Extensions which need to be added back in 1 at a time and tested ..... Or it is your Profile : Make a new one and test ...: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profile-manager-create-and-remove-firefox-profiles

Note : there are some issues being worked on still in regards to use of Applications and what opens them. re PDF.

Please let us know if this solved your issue or if need further assistance.

The first two should invoke a new window integrating with Windows 7. Does the third also usually open a window?

If you haven't already, could you try "the usual":

Cache and Cookies: When you have a problem with one particular site, a good "first thing to try" is clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.

(1) Clear Firefox's Cache

See: How to clear the Firefox cache

If you have a large hard drive, this might take a few minutes. If you do not see the number going down on the page, you can reload it using Ctrl+r to check progress.

(2) Remove the site's cookies (save any pending work first). While viewing a page on the site, try either:

  • right-click (on Mac Ctrl+click) a blank area of the page and choose View Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
  • (menu bar) Tools > Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
  • click the padlock or "i" icon in the address bar, then the ">" button, then More Information, and finally the "View Cookies" button

In the dialog that opens, the current site should be pre-filled in the search box at the top of the dialog so you can remove that site's cookies individually.

Then try reloading the page. Does that help?

Testing in Firefox's Safe Mode: In Safe Mode, Firefox temporarily deactivates extensions, hardware acceleration, and some other advanced features to help you assess whether these are causing the problem.

If Firefox is not running: Hold down the Shift key when starting Firefox.

If Firefox is running: You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
  • Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

and OK the restart.

Both scenarios: A small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Refresh).

Any improvement?

Good morning and thank you both for a speedy reply. In response to both sets of suggestions, I did the following:

1. Signed out of my sync account to make sure that is not the source of the problem. All actions taken after this entry were performed while signed out of my Firefox sync account.

2. Cleared the Firefox cache of everything, all cookies, etc. and tried to use the web buttons that don't work after upgrade. Same problem: buttons still do not work.

3. Started Firefox in safe mode and tried to use the web buttons that don't work after upgrade. Same problem: buttons still do not work.

4. Performed a "refresh" of Firefox and tried to use the web buttons that don't work after upgrade. Same problem: buttons still do not work.

5. Created a new, clean, test profile and tried to use the web buttons that don't work after upgrade. Same problem: buttons still do not work.

The first two should invoke a new window integrating with Windows 7. Does the third also usually open a window? Yes. Interestingly, I have an SSL certificate installed from comodo and I attempted to back it up in the process of clearing out all data, and the backup function in Firefox will not open an explorer window either to permit me to backup the certificate.

Update:

I just attempted to backup my profile information. From the about:profiles page, note that the "Open folder" button at the end of the profile location does not work, either. In other words, the "Open folder" button does not open a folder when I click on it with my mouse pointer.

On Windows, you can access your profile folders using this method. Select and copy the following "shortcut" path, then paste it into either the Start menu search box or the Run dialog (Windows key +R) and press Enter to launch it:

%APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles

That should launch Windows Explorer and show one or more semi-randomly-named folders. Please make a copy of the most valuable one in a safe location.

Then:

Clean Reinstall

We use this name, but it's not about removing your settings, it's about making sure the program files are clean (no inconsistent or alien code files). As described below, this process does not disturb your existing settings. It's not essential to uninstall Firefox, but you can if you like, saying No to any request about removing personal data.

It only takes a few minutes.

(A) Download a fresh installer for Firefox to a convenient location:

https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/

(B) Exit out of Firefox (if applicable).

(C) Using Windows Explorer/My Computer, rename the program folder as follows (you might have one or both):

C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox =to=> C:\Program Files (x86)\OldFirefox

C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox =to=> C:\Program Files\OldFirefox

(D) Run the installer you downloaded in step (A). It should automatically connect to your existing settings.

Any improvement?

Again, thank you.

One interesting thing: I could not download using Firefox - when I clicked on the 64-bit installer link, it asked if I wanted to save the file, but then did not download it when I chose Save file. I used IE browser to download the installer.

Then, I followed all the steps above (including the optional one of uninstalling Firefox) and then when I reinstalled, Firefox asked if I wanted to refresh and I said yes. The procedure seems to have fixed the save file issue (I went back to the mozilla website and was able to download and save the installer this time using Firefox), but the the upload file on dropbox.com and "the Browse" for file button on the Electronic Case Filing (ECF) system still do not work, i.e., do not open an explorer window for me to select the file to upload to dropbox or the court.

Have you shut down and restarted Windows since this problem began? Just in case there is a transient issue with the relevant Windows interface or Firefox's permission to use it.

Yes, I have. And after I uninstalled Firefox earlier today, I restarted at that time.

Does the Browse button to attach a screenshot on this forum work?

What gets selected if you right-click the button and open the Inspector?

You can right-click and select "Inspect Element" to open the builtin Inspector with this element selected.

Good evening and thank you. The "Browse" button on this page does not work.

When I right click on the Browse button and open the inspector, the highlighted line is:

<input id="id_image" name="image" size="30" accept="image/jpeg,image/png,image/gif" title="Browse for an image to upload." type="file">

If I recall x64 doesn't play well with Addons especially with W7x64 installed. I think the latest x64 FF is meant for W10 since my FF install. That might also be a problem if it was x86 FF and didn't work then there needs to be more digging around the setup and preferences but if those Addons aren't FF57 compatible it will not work unless the Addon creator updates them for FF57.

Thank you for the response and thanks also to everyone whose contributed so far.

I don't think it is an Add-On issue, because the same problem occurs in safe mode, which says it disables all of the Add-Ons.

Any other suggestions from anyone?
