Is Java 8 an update I need to install with Firefox and Windows 10?
I use Firefox and Windows 10 and also use from times to times Internet explorer when Firefox would not allow me to access some websites. I have Java for internet explorer. Do I need to update to Java 8 or do I just use the older version of Java that I have, thus slowing down Mozilla (my default browser)?

NO, Java isn't a supported plugin beyond Firefox 52 ESR.
They only Plugin you may need is Adobe Flash Player.

OK, many thanks!
Note that Java and JavaScript are different languages, so do not confuse the two. JavaScript is builtin, but extensions can block JavaScript. Java isn't used much these days and Oracle will stop adding the Java plugin to their Java releases and websites need to switch to Java Web Start (JNLP).
If you use extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) that can block (wanted) content (Adblock Plus, NoScript, Disconnect, Ghostery, Privacy Badger, uBlock Origin) always make sure such extensions do not block (wanted) content.
- make sure your extensions and filters are updated to the latest version
You see the shield icon at the left end of the location/address bar in case content is blocked by Tracking Protection.
- click the shield icon for more detail and possibly disable the protection
- check the Web Console for more detail about what content is blocked by Tracking Protection
- "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Web Developer
