Can't stop POP account checking for new mail

I've done searches and what they say about stopping a POP account from checking for new mail is to uncheck "Check for new messages at startup", "Check for new messages every" (normally followed by a minute value), and "Allow immediate notifications when mail arrives". I've also seen changing the periods in the POP server name to commas. Well, all the boxes are unchecked, and if you try to put in commas and save changes you'll be told to put in a valid server name. All this and I still get pop-ups saying it can't get mail from the POP account because the password is wrong. Of course it's wrong. The ISP deleted it months ago. I just want to keep the mail I have. Help, please!

Are you sure it's a POP account? The option 'Allow immediate notifications...' only appears for IMAP accounts under Server Settings in Tools/Account Settings. Look at the Server Type at the top of Server Settings. An IMAP server that supports IDLE commands will notify of new mail even if all boxes in TB are unchecked.
