How do I change "POP" server to IMAP server? Verizon default to AOL requires an IMAP address. Putting new IMAP address in doesn't work unless the server type is changed. You can't delete it and change it in "server" settings. This 77 yr old needs more guidance please.

Outgoing SMPT doesn't need a change. Thank you.

Remove the POP account in Account Settings, Account Actions, then add it as an IMAP account. For Verizon accounts, use imap.aol.com on 993 and smtp.verizon.net on 465. Authentication = normal password, security = SSL/TLS, User Name = email address. Instead of the account password, create an app password and use that instead.

Hi, are you setting this up in Thunderbird? If so, a moderator can slide your question over to the Thunderbird forum.

I moved this to the Thunderbird forum since based on the question I'm assuming that this is a Thunderbird question.

Getting there. Changed to IMAP server; SMPT didn't need a change. Still getting message "login to server imap.aol.com with user name ...... failed. That's the same message that started all this with the Verizon.net migrating to AOL on 1/26/22. Options are of course, retry, change password or cancel. I had some other issues/notices like this back last summer and I tried changing the password from this message and it didn't solve the problem so am reluctant to do this again. Also if I create an APP password. Will this be the password if I want to check my e-mail on AOL.com remotely, like when traveling and using a friend's computer like to get a flight update? Thank you for your help and patience. Frances

The app password is needed for accessing through apps like TB. You might also need one for mobile devices. The regular account password is still used to access the account through a web browser.

Remove the passwords from Saved Passwords in Preferences, restart TB, enter the app password when asked for a password, check the box to have it stored in Saved Passwords. Use the same app password for incoming and outgoing.
