Title pretty much says it all. I cannot drag tabs to bookmark menu without closing and then reopening bm menu. Then it will last for a while that I can drag tabs to menu but at some point I can no longer drag tabs. When I drag a tab I get a little picture of the tab url page but no line showing where the tab can be dropped.

A corollary to this problem, I think, is that Bookmark Toolbar will not remember overnight the changes I have made. It will remember the changes through a restart and so far, for the rest of the day. But the next morning, the bookmarks are back to what they were, all jumbled up.

I have removed and reinstalled FF, I have refreshed it, I have taken ALL the add-ons off (including the one I use all the time, roboform) and the problem has persisted over several days. I can't remember when exactly it started but a week ago everything was fine, I was using xmarks and roboform with not problem and one day I could no longer sync with xmarks and my bookmarks were all messed up.

You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database file in the Firefox profile folder.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

Thanks! I used your first bullet point, backed up and restored by bookmarks, made some changes and after 24 hours they seem to be staying put and I can drag tabs to the bookmark menu.
