its not unusual for windows to change the security settings for folders and files. additionally, antivirus and anti-spyware programs can be over zealous too.
one method to try is to right click on the firefox icon and fiddle with the settings, such as security and enabling the ""run as admin" option.
another thing to try is creating another windows user account temporarily,
and another thing (that i havent done in a very long time myself) is to see how FF behaves in windows safe mode with networking.

unfortunately, i have nothing else to offer. i havent used a mac since back from the caveman macintosh days.
This may be caused by a problem with the profiles.ini file or with permissions/ownership of those folders/files.
Delete the profiles.ini file to make Firefox create a new (default) profile.
Use the Profile Manager to create a new profile.
If you still have an existing profile then click 'Choose Folder' in the Profile Manager.
You'll find the profiles.ini file in this hidden location :
On Mac OS : *~/Library/Application Support/Firefox/
If clearing the profiles.ini file doesn't work, then also check the location of the cache files.
On Mac OS : *~/Library/Caches/Firefox/Profiles/
You can also try to rename or delete the Mozilla\Firefox\ folder in both locations.
What did you do so far?
Have you been able to locate the profiles.ini file?
In Mac OS X v10.7 and later, the ~/Library folder in the Home directory is a hidden folder.
