I'm getting unwanted mail and I can't get a filter to just delete it. Can you help?
I'm getting mail with a consistent "From" like @somebody.org. I've tried filters applied when "manually run" and "Getting new mail before junk classification" to "Delete Message" (Match any of the following) when the from contains the @somebody.org, or the full mail, like "news@somebody.or, but everything gets put in my junk mail folder instead of trash or just being deleted. How do I just make it go away? We're talking 12-16 mailings a day here from some whacko political group.

set the function of the filter to delete the messages and they will go to your trash, set it to mark them as junk and they will go to your junk. There is no make them totally disappear option.
as stated in the problem, Delete Message was the option chosen. Regardless of that choice and, as stated, they went to Junk anyway, which is my problem.

If you are using Yahoo or one of their ISP contracted services then that would be expected. They decide where spam goes. us mere users are to stupid to make our own decisions.
I'm on Comcast, but I haven't had a problem with any of my other filters. I'm having trouble with the theory that the ISP can affect a filter that just moves things around in my local PC. But I'll look into that.

I refered to Yahoo. As far as I know Comcast does not contract their mail from Yahoo.
Filtering on IMAP account is very much involved with the server as it is synchronized back to the server, so if you filter violates some server side limitation then the filter fails.
But you have not actually said if you use IMAP or POP so I am guessing as most people use IMAP these days that you use IMAP.
Likewise the anti virus or other addons (particularly the ones anti virus companies inject into Thunderbird) can see mail doing spectacularly bizarre things like all new mail going to the trash or junk folders.
Have you tried restarting Thunderbird in safe mode (with addons disabled) from the help menu. That might point to a solution.
