The same website opens repeatedly in a new tab. It's a trusted website (public library). I've run a virus scan and looked for solutions but can't find the problem. Any ideas please?

Thanks for your help Paul. Just yesterday the problem went away. I'm guessing that the 'trusted' public library site had a problem which they fixed, but don't know that for sure.

Hi Sarah

As a first step, I recommend that you clear the browsing history. This support article should help:

Thanks Paul. I'd tried that previously and it didn't solve the issue. Just went and had another look and found a way to delete all cookies (and other things) along with browsing data. This seems to have fixed the problem.

Unfortunately the problem wasn't resolved. The Firefox browser on my desktop computer is fine and doesn't have a problem. It's only on my new Samsung Galaxy phone that the same tab/website keeps opening. Sometimes up to 20 times in succession. Do you have any further words of wisdom?

Do you have an app installed for your library on your Android device?

I am thinking that could be triggering what you are seeing (even with the browsing history cleared).

more options

No I don't have the library app installed.

Could you try using the Firefox for Android Beta app from the Google Play store? It is not so much because it is a beta, but more that it is separate copy of Firefox on your device with its own profile and I am keen to see if the issue is replicated there.

Could you also clarify what is happening in steps?

For example:

1 - you turn on your phone 2 - you open Firefox 3 - ..?

I've uninstalled Firefox. And installed Firefox for Android Beta, signing into my Firefox account and making it default browser. Will let you know what happens after I've used the phone for a few hours. I didn't mention before that the same tab opens repeatedly in Chrome and IE. I try not to use those browsers and Firefox is always set as default. It's difficult to figure out when/why the tab opens and I've been trying to see a pattern, without success. Often the tab opens when I move the phone, especially putting it down on a table. This happens regardless of whether Firefox is open or closed. But the tab will also open at random times when I am doing something else on the phone, again regardless of Firefox being open or closed. Sorry that I can't give you steps but it seems completely random.

If you are seeing this happen in other non-Firefox browsers on your Android device, this suggests the problem is not so much with Firefox for Android, but with another app or service on your device.

Which other apps have you installed on your Android device?

Sorry for the delay. I've deleted all Apps except for banks and others that I trust. I also deleted or disabled all browsers except Firefox. But the problem continues. Since this isn't Firefox-specific, I should maybe take this to an Android forum unless you have any other bright ideas?!

Hi Sarah, no problem at all.

If you do not have Firefox installed, what tab is being opened? I am not suggesting this is a Chrome issue, but is it a Chrome tab that is opening (knowing how tricky it is to remove Chrome from an Android device)?

more options

I went to Settings > Apps and disabled Chrome. So now I'm left with only Firefox as a browser. I've deleted the Samsung browser. The public library tab continues to open multiple times in Firefox.

I am still very baffled as to what is happening.

So you are turning on your device, opening Firefox for Android and tabs keep opening of their own accord without you doing anything, to a specific website that you recognise?

more options

That's it exactly. Very weird. I think that it also happens when Firefox isn't open (eg the specific website 'forces' Firefox to open). I'm going to watch for that over the next 24 hours, by keeping Firefox closed as much as possible. I've cleared all the history several times so that the specific website isn't saved anywhere.

more options

The problem is definitely occurring even when firefox is closed. Eg the public library website 'forces' Firefox to open with the library tab. I have Bitdefender installed and it's not picking up any Malware.

I am sorry, but I do not know what more I can suggest. I have shared this question with others with the only feedback being a misbehaving website (but you have cleared the history) or malware (unusual for an Android device, but you have also run a scan using the app on your device.
