how do I get the newtab page to display my bookmarked sites?
I don't let firefox keep history upon closing. I also don't allow website to track me. I want the newtab page to display the same bookmarked sites I picked for it to display each time, without having to re-pick the sites.

Drag the bookmark(s) that you want to the New Tab Page when it is open, then "pin" the bookmark(s):
- See --> https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/new-tab-page-show-hide-and-customize-top-sites (see "Add a site" and "Pin a site")

Changes are stored in the chromeappsstore.sqlite file in the Firefox Profile Folder under the pinnedLinks key and blockedLinks key, so make sure that you keep that file.
My chromeappsstore.blahblah file says read only. Could that be why I have to keep resetting the newtaburl? (Sorry--I'm an old broad, who wasn't brought up on computers. When I was in college, if a person could even afford a calculator, it weighed about 6 pounds. Didn't even have an electric typewriter...and of course, I walked barefoot in the snow...just like your grandmother. So, thanks for your patience and help!!!! :))
Why and how are you trying to access that file?
That file is an SQLite database file and can only be inspected with an appropriate Firefox extension or software that knows about this format.
Did you try to drag links on one of the nine slots on the about:newtab page?
I have the same problem as the original poster (every time I close the browser, I have to go back to about:config and change browser:newtab back to default in order to get my most visited sites to reappear when I open a new tab page. I've been searching everywhere for a solution that WORKS, so I was just playing off your previous comment along the way to a solution.
