that was the culprit! i disabled it completely and sure enough it came back. thanks so much now i have to see if i can get adblock to work without messing with the links.. at least i know the cause. thanks again
Disabling Adblock in both Thunderbird & Firefox [and restarting both] on my Windows 7 computer failed to put the scrolled-over link's url on the bottom bar of the message. What menu steps should I take?

well it worked for a bit but then it stopped working...adblock is still disabled..don't know whats going on! again!
The url still shows in my XP computer, on which I never installed AdBlock.
it still works (shows the link) in firefox (xp) but doesn't in Tbird
add block is not the only add-on to cause this, only the most common. What other add-ons do you have installed
adblock (disabled), empty cache, flashgot, hide tab bar, who stole my pictures, you tube center,
plugins: java, Ms DRM, npffapi, quicktime, shockwave flash, vlc web plugin,

try restarting with add-ons disabled from the help menu (Alt+H)
I think i must have listed the FFox add ons??...i did as you suggested and then the links showed up..then restarted normally and they are still showing up! but the list of add ons is very small just: ad block, extra columns, compact header and test pilot. we shall see how long it lasts this time...thanks for your continuing help!
I was able to solve the problem in Thunderbird but only by disabling Adblock. Just unchecking the toolbar notifications as first suggested did not solve the problem. Guess I might as well uninstall Adblock since seeing the URLs when I hover over a link is more important. Thanks for the help with this issue.

I do have AdblockPlus installed for Thunderbird, and I have no problems with it. Disabling AdblockPlus sounds like a silly idea to me. For another user 'Extra Folder Columns' was the culprit. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1014022
