Firefox not working on some websites.

I am using the latest Firefox browser on Windows 10 but I am having trouble getting it to work on some of the websites I use on a regular basis. I do all of my personal business with Firefox because I think Firefox is the best, but lately it has stopped working on about 6 of the websites I go to every month to pay my bills. The number of sites have increased from 2 to 6 in the last few months, some will work on Opera and they all work on IE. I do not want to use IE because It can't do all the things Firefox does and I do not want to end up using multiple browsers to take care of my business. I was wondering if some websites no longer support Firefox. I would appreciate any help I can get with this problem.

Could you describe the kind of problems you're experiencing using the sites?

Some users have mentioned ending up on a blank page when there is a payment flow between two different servers -- when the server address changes in the address bar. One possible explanation is the redirect block. You can turn that off here:

  • Windows: "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options
  • Mac: "3-bar" menu button (or Firefox menu) > Preferences
  • Linux: "3-bar" menu button (or Edit menu) > Preferences

In the left column, click Advanced. Then on the right side, with the "General" mini-tab active, make sure the following is not selected (box is not checked): "Warn me when websites try to redirect or reload the page"

The redirect box is not checked. I either get a message wrong ID and/or password or nothing happens when the link is clicked. This was not a problem in the past but lately the number of sites has increased. Some of the ones that don't work in Firefox will work in Opera but not all of them, they all work in IE.

It sounds as though the problem occurs when you are logging in. Do you use Firefox's password manager, or a third party password manager, or are you typing the logins by hand? Some sites may implement features to discourage use of password managers since they want to be sure it's a human accessing the site and not a "bot".

I type them in. I have to tell you I do not have normal problems like everyone else, I always leave people scratching their heads.

I'm sure we haven't run out of suggestions just yet...

Are the login pages identical in IE? For example, do they show a CAPTCHA control in IE but not in Firefox?

If you are using a private window, does the "shield" icon appear to the left end of the address bar indicating that Tracking Protection is being applied? More info on that feature and using the shield to make an exception can be found in this article: What happened to Tracking Protection?.

If the sites are generally known to work in Firefox, these are general suggestions to try when they stops working:

Cache and Cookies: When you have a problem with one particular site, a good "first thing to try" is clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.

(1) Clear Firefox's Cache

See: How to clear the Firefox cache

If you have a large hard drive, this might take a few minutes. If you do not see the number going down on the page, you can reload it using Ctrl+r to check progress.

(2) Remove the site's cookies (save any pending work first). While viewing a page on the site, try either:

  • right-click (on Mac Ctrl+click) a blank area of the page and choose View Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
  • (menu bar) Tools > Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
  • click the padlock or "i" icon in the address bar, then the ">" button, then More Information, and finally the "View Cookies" button

In the dialog that opens, the current site should be pre-filled in the search box at the top of the dialog so you can remove that site's cookies individually.

Then try reloading the page. Does that help?

Testing in Firefox's Safe Mode: In Safe Mode, Firefox temporarily deactivates extensions, hardware acceleration, and some other advanced features to help you assess whether these are causing the problem.

If Firefox is not running: Hold down the Shift key when starting Firefox.

If Firefox is running: You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
  • Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

and OK the restart.

Both scenarios: A small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Refresh).

Any improvement? (More info: Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode)

Looks like I solved most of the problems turns out it was Ghostery, the only problem is with Fidelity.com, I keep getting ID and Password error. Could this be a problem on Fidelity's end? Can you recommend a replacement for Ghostery to manage trackers and cookies?

Thanks Ken

Hi Ken, I don't know what the specific issue is on the Fidelity site. The issue with tracking blockers is that they sometimes are a little overeager. This isn't a problem unique to Ghostery, or Privacy Badger, or Blur, or Disconnect, they all cause problems from time to time. You have to remember to trying making an exception when sites don't work correctly.
