I want to switch my default browser from Internet Explorer to MF on this desktop and import my favourite places into your bookmarks. If I follow your procedure, which is straightforward, will the originals be left on IE once they are copied and imported or will I lose them there?

Yes your favorites will still be in IE, Firefox copies them when importing for Firefox bookmarks.
