Read a few other complaints on this. Assumed it was not legit. Did not open. Very good graphic though, I'm sure there are a lot of takers.. Running adblockplus. Read on another thread that ABP users were not having this issue.

Thanks for the report.

We think users of scriptblockers may be less likely to see this problem. One factor may be what your scriptblockers settings are.

These Fake Updates may apparently sometimes originate from popular sites, including Reddit and many News sites it is quite possible that scriptblocking settings are less strict on some of these trusted sites.

Personally i have not yet seen any of these, despite deliberately visiting some of the reportedly affected sites with Windows and no scriptblocker active. Presumably sites remove malverts once they discover what they do.

There may be time delays and it may not be obvious what site these originate from. Are you still able to reproduce and confirm which site you get these from ? (I am trying to ask about the Advert source or redirect, not the url of the splashscreen - those are personalised and other people do not see them)

Unfortunately, I am unable to reproduce/confirm at this time. Away from that PC. If I see the tab "popup" again, I'll report. Good to know you all are on this..

Thanks for your help.

I am not sure there is too much we can do about this.

Unfortunately novice or naive users will fall for this sort of thing. My worry is even if 1% are caught out that is millions of people, that could then end up vulnerable to additional malware such as keyloggers and ransomware, and those victims will naturally then blame Firefox.
