virgin email not being recevied
A friend has a problem with thunderbird .
its a virgin media email account and the internet provider is John Lewis,
The message "Could not connect to mail server, the connection was refused. " keeps popping up.
I've searched this error on google and there are a variety of answers. I've tried removing the saved password in thunderbird and adding it again but the same problem exists.
The email account works fine through the web browser.
Emails can be sent from thunderbird but its unable to copy them to the sent folder.
I've run some speedtests on the internet connection an it seems to be working fine.
Recently installed Microsoft Security Essentials antivirus and removed Avast.
Any advice appreciate.
Thanks in advance.

Apparently Virgin Media had problems in the local area around the time of this problem.

They've fixed it now and the emails are coming through OK.

I would suspect that an incoming setting has become mis-set. SMTP might be OK since it appears to be sending (but via who?). The saving of a sent message will, if it is IMAP, be dependent on successful connection to the incoming server.
Have you compared the incoming settings with those published by virgin? Has this user been caught up in the sale of some Virgin assets to Taltalk?
As an aside, John Lewis aren't really an ISP, are they? Who do they farm it out to, or buy it in from?
I've checked the email settings as recommended by virgin and it all seems OK.
John Lewis uses Plusnet for internet. I've spoken with their helpdesk and they say they cannot help.
