Incoming emails mark as unread
My settings seem to have changed, Every new email automatically used to come in as 'unread' and in bold and stay as unread until I clicked on them.
However this does not now happen. I only shows emails unread for those that arrived when I was not logged in and any new emails that arrive during the working day just show a read. Plus when I click on a unread overnight email now, it stays as unread unless I physically mark it as red!!
This is getting very annoying and I am missing new emails, please please please can you help?

Check your current settings in Options.
'Menu icon' > 'Options' > 'Options' > 'Display' > 'Advanced' tab Reading: select 'Automatically mark messages as read' select: 'immediately on display' click on 'OK
Did you have these settings?
Are you talking about an imap or pop mail account ?
Have you tried reindexing the folder? right click on Folder and select 'Properties' click on 'Repair folder' button click on 'OK'
Hi thank you for your advise, the options ---- advanced settings were set at Automaticially mark messages as read after displaying for 28800 seconds and no matter what time I set that to it doesn't help. I have now tried the 'repair folder' advise and that doesn't seem to have helped either, messages still showing as unread even when I have clicked on them - any other suggestions? Help !!

What is 'menu icon'?> options - this does not appear in Thunderbird for Mac
The above suggestions do not work for me either. Two other issues have cropped up that may be related. I have been using quick filters assistant for a few weeks and now I find most of my filters have disappeared entirely from the Message Filters dialogs. Also, ALL my Sent messages are no longer going to my Sent folder, but to a particular folder that has nothing to do with the content of my sent messages. Cam anyone help? Is there a general repair facility?
Pretty much as above. All the sudden -- within the last few hours -- Thunderbird is marking all incoming as read. In fact it has marked ALL messages in my inbox as read, even those I've marked as unread to remind me to look at them again, although it has left the gold star alone if I've so marked it. I have unchecked 'Tools>Options>Display>Automatically mark messages as read'. This is really annoying! EDIT: Abt 2 hrs later, now showing unread messages properly (Bold), BUT it is not changing them to Read (unbolded) when I open them.

I was having the same problem with emails appearing as Read before I opened them. I checked the settings and they had changed to Automatically marking messages as read immediately on display from the 7 seconds I had originally set.
I have reset it to 7 seconds and it seems to work as specified.
You can access this menu from: Tools; Options;

If you want to use a time delay and not immediately upon opening. Set a suitable time delay. 28800 seconds is 480 minutes or 8 hours !!
Normbay: re :What is 'menu icon'?> options - this does not appear in Thunderbird for Mac. Windows OS uses different menu from MAC and Linux MAC Via the 'Menu Bar' toolbar Thunderbird > Preferences

You have already stated that you have switched off the facility to mark as read immediately on display, so it is not going to mark them as read unless you do it yourself.
The only way I have found to check my messages now, is to use the Tools - Activity Manager and go through the list of messages to see which folders the filters have moved them to, then read them - as a few, but very few only, are marked as unread.
I wonder if it is the filtering that causes messages to be marked as read before I even get to look at them?
