"deafult search engine on a new tab" - this thread was closed but I have a related question. [the word “default” is spelled as it on the thread] Once you put the new url in, what then? Close it? When tried, it did not work. The closest answer is noted here. Instructing to go to about:fig. Specifically, I installed the accuweather add=on and it took over my tab home page - the one that comes up when you click for a new tab. I didn't like it so I clicked the button to remove it and the page went blank. I searched to see out to restore the tab page, tired the reply at this page : http://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/753256?s=install+search+box+on+new+tabs&r=3&as=s
But it did not work. Can some on help me? Just want to know how to make google or some page open on a new tab. Many thanks

Do not confuse the about:newtab page with the 9 square of visited web pages and the about:home page that has a search bar.
What is the current setting of the browser.newtab.url pref on the about:config page?
You can open about:xxxx pages via the location bar like you open a website.
You can try to reset some preferences to the default with the SearchReset extension:
Note that the SearchReset extension only runs once and then uninstalls automatically, so it won't show on the "Firefox > Add-ons" page (about:addons).
If there is a problem with searching via the default about:home page then try to reset the search engine used on the about:home page.
Reset the browser.startup.homepage_override.mstone pref via the right-click context menu to the default on the about:config page and close and restart Firefox to restore the about:home page to its default.
- Open the about:config page via the location bar
- Type in the Filter bar: mstone
- Right-click the browser.startup.homepage_override.mstone line and select: Reset
- Close and restart Firefox
If this didn't help then delete the delete the chromeappsstore.sqlite file in the Firefox Profile Folder and repeat the above.
You can use this button to go to the Firefox profile folder:
- Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder
Hi,
You can try to right-click and Modify the browser.newtab.url key to e.g. https://encrypted.google.com/ in about:config. Choose Reset to revert to the Firefox default value.
- In the Location bar, type about:config and press Enter. The about:config "This might void your warranty!" warning page may appear.
- Click I'll be careful, I promise!, to continue to the about:config page.
I tried the shorter posted suggestion, but it did not work. Wondering if my version of FF 11.0 prevents this. The page just comes up completely blank. When this didn't work, I created a new browser.newtab.url and inserted the google site...nothing still.
I am not a professional in these matters so i hope I did not make matters worse. I also am adding in this attachment the preference that Accuweather.com inserted in the about:config when it took over the new tab page. Here is the text they insert. (I tried to upload an image...but it failed)
{"EB_SEARCH_TERM":"keyword.url","EB_MAIN_FRAME_URL":"about%3Aconfig","EB_MAIN_FRAME_TITLE":"","EB_TOOLBAR_SUB_DOMAIN":"http://AccuWeather.OurToolbar.com/","EB_TOOLBAR_ID":"CT2422939","EB_TOOLBAR_VERSION":"10.10.27.6","EB_ORIGINAL_CTID":"CT2422939","EB_DOWNLOAD_PAGE":"http://AccuWeather.OurToolbar.com/","EB_TOOLBAR_NAME":"AccuWeather"}
Many thanks, Sr. Peace
Thanks
The about:newtab page doesn't work in Firefox 11, that was added in Firefox 13+
Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).
- Do not click the Reset button on the Safe mode start window or otherwise make changes.
Thanks so much for your support. As I said I am not a professional, so I by chance saw a friend who is and this is what he suggested and it worked. We googled for an answer and found this site: http://www.guidingtech.com/8004/have-new-tab-page-open-specific-website-firefox-chrome/ It says to Download and install Download and install NewTabURL and gives instructions on how to. Now when I open the tab it goes to my preferred search page!
