I have Mac OS 10.6.8 and Firefox 26. I updated java for OS10.6 update 17 and need it to use a digital ID website and when I attempt to it states "java not enabled or not on browser". Looking at the help guides I have been unable to find a way to see if firefox is allowing java. It does not show up under system preferences for my computer version

Hello joegolf, Firefox Start Mozilla Firefox browser or restart it if it is already running At the top of the browser, select the Firefox button (or Tools menu in Windows XP), then Add-ons The Add-ons Manager tab will open. In the Add-ons Manager tab, select Plugins Click Java (TM) Platform plugin to select it Click on the Enable button (if the button says Disable, Java is already enabled) Hope this may help you. Thanks, Dyvik.

Java update 17 looks like the latest for your OS.

I don't how Firefox scan for Java on a Mac.

Make sure that you run Firefox in 64 bit mode if you have a 64 bit OS X version and 64 bit Java version.
