Cannot get SpamAssassin to work on GTUBE test
I am setting up TB spam filtering and cannot get a test of SpamAssassin to work, nor has any of my email been shunted to any Junk folder.
I have set Tools > Security > Junk > When I mark messages as junk: Move them to the accounts 'Junk' folder I have checked Tools > Security > Junk > Enable adaptive junk filter logging All of my accounts are set to send email to Local Folders Inbox: For all accounts, I have set Server Settings > Advanced> "When downloading pop mail for this server, use "Inbox for different account" > "Local Folders" All accounts have
Junk Settings > Enable adaptive junk mail controls for this acccount = Checked Junk Settings > Trust junk mail headers set by SpamAssassin = Checked amd Junk Settings > Move new junk messages to : Other > Junk on Local Folders
I have repeatedly sent a test message that contains the SpamAssassin GTUBE (Generic Test for Unsolicited Bulk Email), namely
XJS*C4JDBQADN1.NSBN3*2IDNEN*GT@@@UBE-STANDARD-ANTI-UBE-TEST-EMAIL*C.34X [omitting the @@@ characters I have just inserted in "GTUBE" to prevent junk filtering of this forum question]. This test is mentioned for example at http://spamassassin.apache.org/gtube/ .
However, these GTUBE containing messages arrive intact in Local Folders > Inbox and are not filtered to any junk folder, even though SpamAssassin claims they should be.
Why is this?
Thank you

re :I have set Server Settings > Advanced> "When downloading pop mail for this server, use 'Inbox for different account' > 'Local Folders'
So, you use global Inbox (Local Folders) for your pop mail accounts. The pop mail accounts do not have their own folders; you can only see Local Folders.
Please check this is set; Tools > Account Settings > Junk Setting for each pop mail account.
- Select: 'Enable adaptive junk mail controls for this account'
- Select an address books you want as a whitelist
- Select: 'Trust junk mail headers set by: Spamassassin'
Destination & Retention
- Select 'Move new junk messages to'
- Select: 'Junk folder on' and Select: 'Local Folder '
Click on 'OK'
Toad-Hall, I am grateful for the reply. The only changes I needed to make was to change, for all accounts,
Junk Settings > Move new junk messages to : Other > Junk on Local Folders
to
Junk Settings > Move new junk messages to : 'Junk' folder on 'Local Folders'
I have sent out additional test messages and am awaiting the results (there seems to potentially be quite a delay) and I will make final comments when results are in.
Meanwhile, I apologize for the corrupted punctuation of my original message. For the record , here it is hopefully in better format:

Question: Cannot get SpamAssassin to work on GTUBE test
I am setting up TB spam filtering and cannot get a test of SpamAssassin to work, nor has any of my email been shunted to any Junk folder.
I have set Tools > OPtion > Security > Junk > When I mark messages as junk: Move them to the accounts 'Junk' folder
I have checked Tools > Security > Junk > Enable adaptive junk filter logging
All of my accounts are set to send email to Local Folders Inbox.
For all accounts, I have set Server Settings > Advanced> "When downloading pop mail for this server, use "Inbox for different account" > "Local Folders"
All accounts have
Junk Settings > Enable adaptive junk mail controls for this acccount = Checked Junk Settings > Trust junk mail headers set by SpamAssassin = Checked and Junk Settings > Move new junk messages to : Other > Junk on Local Folders
I have repeatedly sent a test message that contains the SpamAssassin GTUBE (Generic Test for Unsolicited Bulk Email), namely
XJS*C4JDBQADN1.NSBN3*2IDNEN*GT@@@UBE-STANDARD-ANTI-UBE-TEST-EMAIL*C.34X
[omitting the @@@ characters I have just inserted in "GTUBE" to prevent junk filtering of this forum question]. This test is mentioned for example at http://spamassassin.apache.org/gtube/.

At this point, I have received 2 emails in my Inbox that were addressed to some of my own email addresses and contained the GTUBE SpamAssassin test string. Neither of these were marked by TB as Junk, nor were they shunted to any Junk folder including the one under Local Folders. The message source of one of these messages reports a probability of spam of 93% (added at a university server), and the GTUBE string was intact.
There seems to be a bug here in the working of SpamAssassin in TB. Of course, I am just learning TB and if I just need more tweaking of settings, I would be happy to hear.
Thank you.
Have you tried
- Restart Thunderbird with add-ons disabled (Thunderbird Safe Mode). On the Help menu, click on "Restart with Add-ons Disabled". If Thunderbird works like normal, there is an Add-on or Theme interfering with normal operations. You will need to re-enable add-ons one at a time until you locate the offender.
- Restart the operating system in safe mode with Networking. This loads only the very basics needed to start your computer while enabling an Internet connection. Click on your operating system for instructions on how to start in safe mode: Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, OSX
- If safe mode for the operating system fixes the issue, there's other software in your computer that's causing problems. Possibilities include but not limited to: AV scanning, virus/malware, background downloads such as program updates.
Thank you Matt, good suggestion. I finally figured out how to reliably send a message containing GTUBE that was not filtered out by the various network spam filters. This was done by sending a message from and to my GMail address. With no other modifications, the message consistently arrived in TB with no indication that it was spam.
I then tried both your suggestions. First sent GTUBE message and checked with TB in safe mode. Then rebooted Windows to its own safe mode and fetched yet another new message in TB again operating in its safe mode. In both cases, the message arrived clean and unadorned, no indication that it was spam or shunting to the Junk folder.
So far, no cigar, but thank you very much for the suggestions.
