How do I shift the bookmarks to the left as I am used to and remove other items like latest headlines and getting started that I don't want?

I have installed Firefox 4 and I don't like this change. If it cannot be done, please tell me how to go back to Firefox 3.

It's like moving the desktop icons. Hold left click down and move pointer to where you want bookmark!

The bookmark Icon in FF4 cannot be moved !

You need to open the Toolbar Customize mode to be able to drag toolbar elements to a different position,

It is possible to downgrade to Firefox 3.6 for instance, or even the earlier versions, but they will be less secure. It is also fairly easy to customise a lot of Firefox behaviour and make it more like some of the earlier versions.

The bookmarks toolbar is the one that includes some of the default bookmarks like Getting Started and latest headlines; I think by default on firefox 4 that does not even display, but when it does display the items normally start on the left.

  • to display the bookmarks tool bar use
Firefox Button -> Options [x] bookmarks menu
  • to remove items from the toolbars use one of these methods
    • select Toolbar Layout from the above menu,
    • or right click an empty area of toolbar.
From the customise/customize menu you can drag and drop and rearange items and toolbars as required, and decide on icon display
    • see how do i customize the toolbars? ( & also customizing firefox)
  • if you prefer the menu toolbar display of Firfox 3.5 etc use
    • Firefox Button -> Options -> MenuBar
    • to temporarily display the menu toolbar, even if the Firefox Button is displayed use the keyboard key Alt
  • to remove single bookmark items/icons (it may be better to move items)
    • right click and delete
    • or use Firefox Button -> Bookmarks -> Show all bookmarks
    • use the show all bookmarks -> (bookmarks manager) to move items to another folder such as to unsorted bookmarks ( that way they are easily available but not displaying and cluttering your toolbar).

Obviously I do not know exactly what you are trying to do, or what customisation you may already have carried out, so I am guessing somewhat.

  • Tabs these may now be on top in firefox 4 see why are tabs on top? again this is optional you are able to chose whether to display tabs on top or not
    • When on top the firefox button may be at the left and other icns at the right
so you no longer have the full width available
and (in some versions ?? e.g 5.0a2) tabs may be deleted from the right and not immediately expand or move to full the available width

BTW
The bookmarks items may be moved in firefox 4

  • you may for instance tack them on to the end of the menubar toolbar by using customise / layout
  • individual bookmark items may be moved as mentioned, to other folders, or rearanged as you wish (including into nested folders) in the bookmarks manager, or temporarily be reordered on different sort keys. You can have a mix or folders and single bookmarks displaying on the bookmarks toolbar.
  • see bookmark folders

Thank you all for your replies which were very helpful. The new Firefox was so different looking that it frightened me and confused me. The help pages covered so many things that it is difficult to locate the required advice. I have now made it look more like I want. I am sure all these additional features are excellent, but they are too complex for little, old me.

Glad it helped.

I am sticking with the old fashioned bookmarks toolbar myself for instance, but I understand if I was looking at say artwork or some highly visual content in the browser, the new panorama feature could help.

Change and improvements can be good, but not when it suddenly interferes unnecessarily with a well understood and working system.

Maybe now the Firefox changes are being made more frequently we will not get the shock of sudden large changes that occurred between Firefox 3.6 and 4.0.
(I'm already trying out firefox 5 & 6)

I have an ibook G4 (in case this method only works on them).

To get rid of the headlines and getting started etc I did this:

Go to Bookmarks right at the top, then in there click on organise. In library go to the bookmarks toolbar. Only then was I able to click on the bookmark and delete it.

I am sure there is a simpler way, but this is the way I have muddled through and done it.
