I have tried all the methods suggested, including making a text file with comma separated fields, and used the wizard to import it into Thunderbird, but it does not work.

Chosen solution

A properly formatted csv file does work, so the problem must be with how you are creating it.

Thunderbird will only import the first 20 columns in a csv file, so you may need to weed out any unused or empty fields.

The fields it recognizes are given here: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Import_address_list_from_text_file

but the site is down right now. :-(
