When I click to open thunderbird but the email window does not appear before the icon shows the app closed again, how do I fix this?

To start thunderbird, I click on the quick start icon on my toolbar, it highlights as if starting, then a few seconds later, returns to a closed state. No email window ever appears on screen. When I check the task manager, thunderbird does not appear in the running apps list, but one or two processes show running on the details tab (one process from first clicking on the icon, then another if I right click and try to open one of the optional windows). I am running Windows 8.1. It had been working fine earlier in the day, so I have no idea what has happened. Rebooting the PC does not help the issue. How do I get the thunderbird windows to show up on screen again? If I can't, please send instructions to backup all associated email and address profile information so I do not have lose anything... then uninstall and reinstall thunderbird and restore all info associated with my current profile. Thank you.

Chosen solution

Thanks for the reply... still not sure what happened, but I ended up uninstalling and re-installing t bird. It all went back to normal after that. So, your solution may work, but I did not get the chance to try it. My solution, though not ideal, was effective and the problem was solved.
