I don't know what the tech in smoking but, every time I update firefox (at least the last 3 times) yahoo is installed on my pc also. it takes me days to remove. I have not been upgrading because of it. I too, am ready to ditch firefox because of it.

That's not normal. Did your system get infected with an "updater" that bundles Firefox with other programs??

Firefox normally remembers your home page and default search engine settings from session to session, and from reboot to reboot, and through upgrades. The exceptions are:

(1) If Firefox reports that its starting up slowly and suggests restoring some default settings: if you click that button to run the Refresh feature, your home page will be set back to the built-in Firefox home page, and your default search engine will be set to the regional default (in North America, Yahoo).

(2) The setting can change between Firefox sessions for a range of reasons from locked settings files to cleaning software. This article has some examples of what to check to address those issues: How to fix preferences that won't save.

(3) The setting can change at Windows startup if you have utility software such as CCleaner set to clear out browser data.

(4) The settings can change at any time if you have malware on your system or a bad add-on.

1st - I refuse to go back and forth with you as you seem to like to do. 2nd - I also am very computer literate (worked support for several years, I still do remote pc repair for several of my clients, built pcs, web design) in short I would say I'm an advanced computer user. You blaming another software for your issues is insulting. 3rd - are you wanting users like myself and asimpson to use something other than firefox. 4th - I started using firefox before it was call firefox and have been thru many upgrades and the only times I have had issues like this is when it is added to upgrade. 5th - I have been looking for months for a replacement for firefox and now that you are blaming others including myself for issues - I will start looking harder. You have no right. If it were another software or malware it would not happen only during firefox upgrade. 6th - look at all the firefox users that have the same issue. they can not all be affected at the same time by the same malware.

Hi portable, what you are experiencing is horrible but it is not by design. If millions of users were getting their home page and default search engine changed at every update, it would be headline news on every tech site. I don't know what's going on with your system(s), but I can understand that you're disgusted with the situation and not interested in hearing what I'm saying.

The only thing Yahoo that Firefox from mozilla.org or www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/ comes with is as a Search engine which is the default if you use the en-US locale. It does not come with or install any additional Yahoo stuff on OS whether on Windows, Mac OSX, or Linux.

Google is no longer the default search engine starting Firefox 34.0 which came out early December 2014. Every locale can have a different default search engine in use now since.
