Suddenly, when trying to reply to email on Thunderbird, The reply button creates another window of the original message, not a reply that I can edit and send. It's maddening. Happened mid-day yesterday (8/31/16). Uninstalled and reinstalled, restarted, no joy.

Are you viewing/reading the email in:

  1. the lower 'Message Pane' ?
  2. in a new tab ?
  3. a new window ?

When you 'click on Reply button'...which 'reply' button ? Is it the one in the 'header' area - same area where it says From, subject, To etc? Is it a 'Reply' button you have placed on the 'Mail Toolbar' ?

What happens if you right click on email in list and select 'Reply to sender only' ?

As my message stated, yes, many times. No joy. I've switched to outlook. Temporarily, I hope.

Didn't matter, anything I tried resulted in the same: a new window copy of the old. I solved the problem by creating a new user account and migrating my address book and mail. Which took the greater part of a day. The sad part is that when I want to create a new email now, the search facility that generates a fill-in when I type a partial no longer works. But at least I haven't lost any data. And that's critical.
