On several habitual sites, if multiple tabs are opened, the PC and FF bogs down; I assume due to refresh. Is there a feature to stop this?

I am assuming it's the site's (or it's advertizer's) javascript that is causing. Can javascript by temporarily disabled on a page by page basis, for example after the page completely loads. It would be a useful feature. The sites I am using are news sites. If the refreshing is caused by another mechanism or problem, can you suggest what it is? It seems to me that all the new browser functionality has enabled web sites to become apps and even an OS on our machines; we have lost control.
