As of a few days ago (after years of no issue) Thunderbird stopped syncing Gmail folders. 9k + files get re-downloaded. All folders have been "Compressed", All folders are: "File> Subscribe" What are non typical things to look for to fix this and get Thunderbird to sync correctly?

Chosen solution

Gmail IMAP has had problems this past weekend. What you are seeing is happening to many people, including my father. Other than my father, I've directly helped another person via remote control, and saw the same thing with their Gmail account.

This is not Thunderbird, but the Gmail IMAP servers responding slowly, or not at all, causing all sorts of problems.

Given the number of people affected and it being Monday, I'm hoping that Google is fixing it as we speak.

It turns out that I am wrong.

This issue is a bug in Thunderbird 52.2.0, and Gmail is blameless.

I didn't know this because I didn't search Bugzilla for this issue.

The relevant bug for this is here: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1373161

At this moment, there is no indication of a solution for the masses, other than reinstalling the older 51.1.1 version from here: https://archive.mozilla.org/pub/thunderbird/releases/52.1.1/
