Thunderbird 91.2.0 crashes accessing newsgroups
Installed 91.2.0 last night. I use Tbird for email (works perfectly) and for three newsgroups via news.individual.net
Since the update, Tbird is still collecting messages from these groups, but clicking on the group to read messages causes Tbird to crash.
Not sure what to do next?
Thanks Adrian

Post a crash ID from Help/More Troubleshooting, Crash Reports. An ID is a string starting with bp-...
In the meantime, run TB in safe mode (hold Shift when launching) and see if it still crashes.
Hi - thanks for that. Think this is the crash ID bp-68b054ac-2b87-4b3a-8292-a964a0211014
Tried safe mode, a TB process starts (visible in Task Manager) but
the application doesn't get as far as opening a window...
Not sure if it's related, but a recent Libre-office update caused Libre to crash - something to do with an issue with certain video cards and a new video feature (can't remember the name, but it was a 4-letter thing starting with S).
Had to drop down to several earlier Libre releases in order to get it working again...
The crash report points to this bug: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1732549
It looks like it will be fixed in the next 91 release, perhaps within a week or two. Avoid setting View/Threads to Unread in the meantime and see if that is stable.
Hi. Thanks for the info. I don't pretend to understand the details in the bug discussion - way above my head <grin>.
As to changing the 'View/Threads to Unread' option - as far as I can see, I need to be able to _select_ the folders in order to change that option - but every time I try to do that, TB crashes.
Right-clicking on the thread doesn't bring up that option..
Can I 'downgrade' my TB to a version which doesn't have this bug - and, if so, where would I find that version, and is it simply a matter of downloading it and installing it?
Thanks for your help so far - appreciate it Adrian
The previous 78 release is here, but it's not as simple as installing it and opening the existing profile. I would advise installing 78 in a separate folder, not running it at the end of setup, opening a Run window (Win+R) and starting Profile Manager by entering <path to TB 78>/thunderbird.exe -p and creating a new profile, then adding a newsgroup account. This will keep the 78 and 91 setups separate, and you can return to 91 when the bug is fixed.
Thanks - had a feeling it might not be straightforward... I'd be in deep trouble were I to do something and mess up my historical emails - so perhaps I'll just forgoe my newsgroup access until the new version of TB comes out...
Thanks! Adrian
If it's just a text newsgroup, consider reading it in Google Groups. If it's a binary attachment group, you probably aren't using TB for that anyway.
No =- plain old text newsgroups <grin> I can live without. I'm guessing that TB will tell me when there's an update available?
Many thanks Adrian
TB should notify, but you can check for updates in Preferences/General/Updates.
Perfect - thanks.
So - just checking - the 'Release Notes' page now shows 91.2.1 as the latest release.
Do you know if this release contains the bug-fix for this 'reading newsgroups' problem?
Many thanks Adrian
It's not in the release notes, but it appears to be fixed in 91.2.1:
