First, Thunderbird does not administer account space; that is provided by your email host. To increase your allowed space, see if they offer upgrade options. Second, if you are using Gmail, you can save a lot of space by unsubscribing from the AllMail folder. Third, to save space on the account, you could do this:

  1. create a folder in Local Folder
  2. highlight some messages and rightclick and select 'COPY to' the folder. Then, while still highlighted, click delete, to delete from server
  3. OR, you coul create manual filter to copy and then delete.

Thanks for that david . i will ask about upgrading space.

im not sure what you mean by gmail.. i use TB on laptop and the standard iphone email app on iphone..?

If i save a file like you say, ( into a folder ) this then stays on my pc but i can open it at a later date ? And if that is correct ; can i then use it to restart the email conversation again later ??

Sorry for the daft questions , im learning ... TIA

Having email on your PC does not prevent any routine use of the message, such as replying or forwarding. It will remain on your PC until you delete it. My comment on gmail was only if you are using a gmail.com account. Otherwise, just disregard.
