Firefox won't save passwords, won't ask to save them. I've used this for 2 years +. I know where the settings are. New comp, Windows 7, Ffx 4. Prompted to save the password 5 times and stopped so I am asking anyone here if they have any suggestions.
Why do you have to make this such a pain. 40 minutes I've been trying to post this question.
Chosen solution
- Make sure that you not run Firefox in (permanent) Private Browsing - Use Firefox without saving history mode.
- You enter Private Browsing mode if you select: Tools > Options > Privacy > History: Firefox will: "Never Remember History"
- To see all History and Cookie settings, choose: Tools > Options > Privacy, choose the setting Firefox will: Use custom settings for history
- Uncheck: [ ] "Automatically start Firefox in a private browsing session"

tried that and still having problems. Using Vista PC
Same issue here. I am NOT running in Private Browsing mode.
This may be an issue related to other add-ons, or not. I tried the remember-password bookmarklet with one site and it Worked! But when I looked in the saved passwords, the new userid and password were not there. I waited a few minutes and looked again, and mysteriously, it was there. Perhaps a caching issue. Exceptions box is empty.
I think this in an important issue that must be tracked and not assumed is always an operator-error.
You may have an extension interfering or other software on your computer that prevents Firefox from updating files properly. Such things are easily overlooked and people expect extensions to work without problems or even do not notice that some other software has added a new extension to Firefox.
There are a few possibilities if adding new passwords doesn't work and remember passwords is enabled:
- Private Browsing
- Websites using autocomplete=off
- Extensions or external software causing problems.
- corrupted password files (key3.db and signons.sqlite) or other problems with the password manager not working properly.
I'm having the same problem. It was saving the passwords then all of a sudden its not saving them and every time I look into options the save passwords box keeps becoming unchecked after I've checked it. I've added nothing and changed nothing - except for allowing firefox to update itself on my computer when it needs to. I've never used private mode and even double checked that it wasn't in private mode. Using Windows XP.
This problem i have had before, what i realized is that when i instal a newer version of Firefox (upgrade) then ccleaner deletes everything every time i run it, so now whenever i upgrade Firefox, i will first run ccleaner, then install the new firefox, log into all my sites, then i will also uninstall and re-install ccleaner, this way ccleaner does a intelligent cookie scan when it is being installed, since i started doing this Ive had no problems
