Sorry, I'm not a contributor. I was exploring my new support account, and accidentally clicked on the wrong link. I'm a newbie here. Here's my problem:

At this link:

http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/How%20to%20find%20which%20folder%20a%20bookmark%20is%20in

there's instructions on how to find the folder and folder path for a saved bookmark. At one point the instructions read: "The bookmark's folder will be displayed in the Folder: field.", which is correct, however,it then reads, "Click the down arrow button to see the full folder path." and this is not correct, or my Firefox is not working properly. What happens when I click the down arrow is that the Bookmark Folder Tree appears, and the bookmark gets automatically moved to the Bookmark Toolbar Folder or whichever Folder happened to be already highlighted in the tree. If I'm not careful to cancel out of that small bookmark window the bookmark gets permanently moved. to the highlighted folder. According to your instructions when the down arrow is clicked the part of the folder tree where the folder to which the bookmark in question belongs should show and the containing folder should be highlighted., and this doesn't happen at all. This has been quite frustrating since, unintentionally, many of my bookmarks have become rearranged. Does anyone have a solution for me. Thanks!

I can't replicate the problem. You're saying the bookmark actually changes folders when you click the red-circled button?

When I click the red circled button the folder tree pops up, and whatever folder happens to be highlighted there the bookmark gets moved to it, immediately. If I click 'Done' instead of 'Cancel' the bookmark gets moved to the highlighted folder permanently. If I click 'Cancel' it stays where it belongs.

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

Hello, and thanks for your help. I can report a little progress with this issue. I started Firefox as you instructed, and the problem disappeared. Once back in normal mode it reappeared. I then proceeded to turn off my Add-ons one by one, in normal mode, testing after each one had been turned off, and the problem remained even after they had all been turned off. At first I thought the problem was somehow not there anymore, but after navigating from bookmark to bookmark the problem reoccurred. Figuring this all out took a while. Now I don't know how to proceed from here. Could you please explain how to determine if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem? Thanks so much!

Did you try to disable all extension to see if it still happens?

If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.

  • Use "Disable all add-ons" on the Safe mode start window to disable all extensions.
  • Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")

I guess extensions means Add-ons, or is there a distinction? As I explained in my last posting: "I started Firefox [in safe mode] as you instructed, and the problem disappeared. Once back in normal mode it reappeared. I then proceeded to turn off my Add-ons [extensions, right?] one by one, in normal mode, testing after each one had been turned off, and the problem remained even after they had all been turned off." I've also gone into safe mode, and there, turned off all the extensions, restarted into normal mode, and the problem remains. In other words, in safe mode the problem doesn't occur weather the extensions are turned off or not. In regular mode, the problem appears weather the extensions are turned off or not. As it appears to me, the extensions, or add-ons, are not the problem. Any ideas?

Safe mode might be bypassing some customized settings as well. Starting in Version 4, customized settings are listed under Help > Troubleshooting Information. However, in version 3.6, I don't know how you can find them all...

In Firefox 4 and later Safe mode disables extensions and disables hardware acceleration.

  • Tools > Options > Advanced > General > Browsing: "Use hardware acceleration when available"

Hello and thanks, jscher2000. I'm not sure I'm ready to try V. 4 just yet. I did look through all my settings under Tools > Options and nothing popped out as possibly causing the problem. If you can think of any settings that could potentially cause my problem I'd be curious to know which ones you think could be the ones, and I'll play around with them. At some point the next step will be to try a new version, but for the moment I'm going to hold off to see if something else can be done. Thanks again for the suggestion.

Thanks cor-el. As I mentioned to jscher2000 I'm going to to hold off on trying Ff4 for the moment. I'll take a look at http://kb.mozillazine.org/Corrupt_localstore.rdf when I get a chance, and post accordingly. Thanks for that!
