Hi all, I am having trouble disabling the facebook chat sound when I am chatting via the Firefox social API thingy. There is simply no option for me to disable the sound. Obviously, disabling the chat sound in the web console in facebook.com doesn't help at all. I'll appreciate if you have any quick fix (like deleting the sound file or changing it to a mute sound file if it's stored locally in my PC) or greasemonkey script or add-on that can help me on it. Thanks.

I think you'd have to turn firefox sound off in the volume mixer (bottom-right corner). Should mute it w/o muting plugins (which use another process)

Do you mean the volume mixer setting in the Windows? I couldn't mute Firefox as I usually have web radio or youtube running behind a tab that plays music.

Plugins use another process unless you are using HTML5, try looking in the Firefox install folder for an audio file in this location and delete it.

  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox

Thanks for the information. It seems that the social API uses HTML5 (it doesn't seem like Flash as it still makes the sound when I mute Flash plugin). There's no audio file in that location as well.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window or otherwise make changes.

You can disable the Social features by setting the social.enabled pref to false on the about:config page.
