I'm using My MSN as my homepage with automatic sign-in. Suddenly, Firefox 27 sticks on opening to the homepage -- blank screen. When I hit the refresh button, the homepage comes up but requests my sign-in info to get to my page. I did remove the Conduit Search engine which I never loaded and finally did a Reset of Firefox. The problem remained so I restored my original data from the previous profile. BTW, the "Old Firefox Data" folder created during the reset contains only the Extensions sub-folder and only two files. Fortunately the complete old default profile still existed and I could copy the data into the profile created by the reset.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Your System Details List shows that you run Firefox in Private Browsing mode.

  • Tools > Options > Privacy > Firefox will: "Use custom settings for history"
  • Deselect: [ ] "Always use private browsing mode"

Note that your System Details List shows that you have a user.js file in the profile folder to initialize some prefs each time you start Firefox.

The user.js file is only present if you or other software has created it, so normally it wouldn't be there. You can check its content with a plain text editor if you didn't create this file yourself.

The user.js file is read each time you start Firefox and initializes preferences to the value specified in this file, so preferences set via user.js can only be changed temporarily for the current session.

Delete a possible user.js file and numbered prefs-##.js files and rename (or delete) the prefs.js file to reset all prefs to the default value including prefs set via user.js and prefs that are no longer supported in the current Firefox release.

Thanks for the help. I disabled private browsing and found both user.js and prefs.js in both profiles. I renamed them and my homepage was restored. However, I need to restore my original customizations which included both functional and security addons. How would I do that without finding myself back in a bind? I should mention that after I received your answer, I got an alert from Norton Security that I had been attacked by a Trojan, which it neutralized. Sounds like this is what caused the problem. In would have been nice if Norton had caught it before it did damage, but you can't have everything, right?
