i have to copy email messages from my imap email server to my local inbox. i have to mark email messages "as read" on my imap email server using a menu option. i have to select a menu option for my filters to be applied to email messages in my inbox. i believe that these three actions should be automatic with thunderbird, however, they aren't. please provide solutions.

To diagnose problems with Thunderbird:

  • Restart Thunderbird with add-ons disabled (Thunderbird Safe Mode). On the Help menu, click on "Restart with Add-ons Disabled". If Thunderbird works like normal, there is an Add-on or Theme interfering with normal operations. You will need to re-enable add-ons one at a time until you locate the offender.

after restarting thunderbird in safe mode with all addons disabled, the mentioned problems still exist. please advise.

How do you "copy email messages from my imap email server to my local inbox."?

That might answer some questions I have.

Please add the troubleshooting information to your post Just the "mail and new accounts" and "Extensions" sections I think.

To find the Troubleshooting information:

  • Open Help (or click on three-line-icon and select Help)
  • Choose Troubleshooting Information
  • Use the button Copy to clipboard to select all. Do not check box "Include account names"!
  • Paste this in your post.

Do I assume you have fixed this topic as well? BTW I think Avast s and always has been the issue. See https://wiki.mozilla.org/Thunderbird:Testing:Antivirus_Related_Performance_Issues#AVAST

I have a configured imap web email account (gmail). when new email messages arrive, those messages aren't (but in my opinion should be) copied to my inbox on my local folders. therefore, I have to make that happen by selecting all of the new email on gmail, right clicking, then selecting "copy to inbox (again)".

trouble shooting information:

Ok so now we are making progress. The Local folder inbox is only available for POP mail accounts. As your account is IMAP, local folders has no real purpose other than as a local store for some mail that you specifically want off the gmail server. IF you want all mail off the server then IMAP is a very poor choice.

So marking mail as read will not work as your now working with local copies in your local folder and not the copies on the imap inbox.

Basically once you accept that the Gmail \inbox is the correct location for your mail and stop trying to enforce an inappropriate location on the mail everything else will flow. If you want to stop using the synchronization features of IMAP and have totally separate email in local folders, use POP and again it will just work.

But you can not have mail in "local folders" and IMAP at the same time. It does not work, it never worked and I doubt it ever will.

but previously copying email messages from my gmail inbox to my local thunderbird inbox worked automatically. perhaps my gmail imap configuration isn't correct; i should ask for help with my gmail account.

Previously you used POP.

No; previously I used IMAP. Now I'm trying POP3.

Are you saying you have changed the account from what you posted above? because that is clearly an IMAP account.
