It looks like version 16 is the last to support 10.5.8 http://website-archive.mozilla.org/www.mozilla.org/thunderbird_releasenotes/en-US/thunderbird/16.0/system-requirements/

Version 16 had some issues, so use 16.0.2 https://archive.mozilla.org/pub/thunderbird/releases/16.0.2/mac/

Better choice, if it runs on intel, is https://osdn.net/projects/tenfourbird/
