Not everyone can do this with chrome! I hate Chrome. Don't know why you took them off of the bottom to begin with. Clearly a lot of people want them back. Not convenient on Top!

Why can't you, or someone, make an extension like before?

Extensions are not allowed to make drastic changes to the toolbars. Even Tree Style Tabs, which totally rearranges your tabs in the sidebar, can't hide the now useless top tab bar. That may change next year, but Firefox 57 won't be getting that kind of change.

I'm not sure why the userChrome.css change didn't work on your Firefox. Could you try again?

(1) Create a chrome folder in your currently active Firefox profile, by following Steps 1-3 of this page:

https://www.userchrome.org/how-create-userchrome-css.html

Or confirm that it is in the expected location already.

(2) Download a custom rule set from my website, and move it into that new chrome folder. This is the file:

https://www.userchrome.org/samples/userChrome-tabs_on_bottom.css

(3) If you have a userChrome.css file in that folder which is not working, remove it.

(4) Shorten the name of the new file from userChrome-tabs_on_bottom.css to userChrome.css.

(5) Exit Firefox and start it up again so Firefox reads and applies the rules.

Success?

Default has always been top. You made a configuration change a long time ago and it sticks in your profile till now. Yes the can be put back on the bottom but must do so with chrome. Please see : https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1189624#answer-1039600

fyi: https://www.howtogeek.com/333110/how-to-customize-firefox-quantum-and-remove-the-white-space-around-the-title-bar/ and https://www.howtogeek.com/334716/how-to-customize-firefoxs-user-interface-with-userchrome.css/ please see links page bottom. and https://www.userchrome.org/ https://www.userchrome.org/what-is-userchrome-css.html Here's a more comprehensive project which affects not only tabs but brings back the old "grid-style" options menu. https://github.com/axydavid/FirefoxUI/blob/master/README.md

It isn't completely possible to use the Australis design with Firefox 57, but depending on what you want, you might be able to customize the UI to look more like the old one: This project: https://github.com/wilfredwee/photon-australis lets you have the old tab bar appearance back in Firefox 57. You can remove the space around the address bar by right-clicking on the spaces, and choosing "remove from toolbar". Note the Black Theme is just a Example and can be found in Customize

Please let us know if this solved your issue or if need further assistance.

Default is on Top not on the Bottom. Always has been.

So did you make the usserchrome file and put it in your profile or what ever the info told you to do with it.

So notepad then save as and make the extension change. Put where told to.... Sorry is sorta step by step and it should work as others that have done so have had it work.

Did you restart Firefox after ?

Yes, I even restarted the computer. Why can't you, or someone, make an extension like before?
