What about the rest of your profile? Settings, bookmarks, history, passwords . . . .

Restore Bookmark Backups

Firefox automatically makes backups of the bookmarks. These are stored in the bookmarkbackups folder.

Open the Bookmarks Manager; Press the Alt or F10 key to bring up the toolbar, and select Bookmarks. Hot key is <Control> (Mac=<Command>) <Shift> B. Firefox 84+ <Control> (Mac=<Command>) <Shift> O.

Once the window is open, at the top of the page, press the button labeled Import and Backup. Select Restore. From the list, pick the file you want and click it.

The backups are stored in a jsonlz4 file named something like this; bookmarks-2016-06-29_1424_enD1GTH ya0JmicnYWg4V4g==.jsonlz4

In this example; 2016-06-29 = date created 1424 = number of entries.

Thank you Fred. Part of the problem was that I could not find the bookmarks backup file, nor previous profiles. Eventually, I resolved the problem by using a laptop which because it is seldom used, had not been updated but did have access to all my current bookmarks which I saved to a USB stick – just in case!. At the same time, I carried out a System Restore on the PC as I knew the system had been updated only a few hours before. This worked. I haven’t a clue what happened. As an ex-system designer (admittedly a long time ago), I get extremely fed up with updates, which I may be able to delay, but almost every time when implemented, create problems which result in me having to manually make changes so that my system works AS I WANT IT TO as I want it to, not as MS (and other software suppliers) think I should. Very tempted to change to Linux and Open Office or similar and for security, use another laptop just for Internet & Mail.

However thanks again,

John Bailey

I understand how you feel. I didn’t like where Firefox Quantum was going. So, I stopped updating at v54. So far, no real issues. And I still have my Legacy add-ons.

I have noticed, however, that some websites don't work properly.

So, is everything in order? Is the problem gone?

Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles {web link} I use a Legacy add-on that makes backups of my user profile, Just In Case. Unfortunately, it is not compatible with the current Firefox.

Every now and then, open the profile folder and create a copy of the current profile as is to another location on your hard drive. This way you will have a backup.

If you do this each day, you will not lose much data. This should be done with Firefox Closed.

Note: In case you need to restore from these backups, you may need to overwrite old or corrupted files.
