Thunderbird causes computer to freeze -- Pop OS
To whoever it may concern,
I enjoyed using thunderbird for years, but lately, my computer got completely frozen multiple times. I cannot do anything else than reboot with the power button. I reached out for help with the computer providers, and we realized that thunderbird was responsible. Now, I cannot even use my computer whenever thunderbird is on, even in safe mode. The logs returned something like what follows:
avril 12 08:33:51 pop-os thunderbird.desktop[3855]: IPDL protocol error: Handler returned error code!
avril 12 08:33:51 pop-os thunderbird.desktop[3855]: ###!!! [Parent][DispatchAsyncMessage] Error: PClientManager::Msg_ExpectFutureClientSource Processing error: message was deserialized, but the handler returned false (indicating failure)
avril 12 08:33:51 pop-os thunderbird.desktop[3855]: IPDL protocol error: Handler returned error code!
avril 12 08:33:51 pop-os thunderbird.desktop[3855]: ###!!! [Parent][DispatchAsyncMessage] Error: PClientManager::Msg_ForgetFutureClientSource Processing error: message was deserialized, but the handler returned false (indicating failure)
avril 12 08:33:54 pop-os thunderbird.desktop[3855]: IPDL protocol error: Handler returned error code!
avril 12 08:33:54 pop-os thunderbird.desktop[3855]: ###!!! [Parent][DispatchAsyncMessage] Error: PClientManager::Msg_ExpectFutureClientSource Processing error: message was deserialized, but the handler returned false (indicating failure)
There are apparently hundred of lines like these in the logs.
Do you know if anything can be done to fix this problem ? Have you seen it before ? I would very much like to be able to use thunderbird again.
Thank you very much in advance for your help.
Sincerely

With Linux distributions many build their own Thunderbird from source. SO where did you get yours?
Have you approached the distribution support?
My computer uses Pop OS. It is its native distribution. I did approach the distribution support, as a matter of fact they suggested that I try to ask my question here. Apparently, the person I talked to told me that he saw thunderbird cause freezing in other cases.
I am aware of many possible causes of Thunderbird not responding, I am aware of nothing that would hang an entire Linux operating system. Thunderbird should not be able to do that in Linux.
Have you seen these topics https://github.com/pop-os/pop/issues/1172 https://support.system76.com/articles/freezing-behavior/
I have also seen issues over the years, most especially on Linux, where open source video drivers cause issues with Firefox and Thunderbird. Try changing the hardware acceleration in preferences. As the issues are driver specific there is no correct setting for hardware acceleration.
Thank you for your help.
I have tried a couple of things over the last few days without any success, but here is why I strongly suspect a link with thunderbird: - Yesterday I had to reboot at least 5 times in a row. The sixth I did not open thunderbird and could work safely the entire day. The same thing happened today. - I tried to uninstall and reinstall thunderbird on my computer this morning, but after roughly one minute, the computer always got frozen, so that I did not even have the time to setup my account properly (I do not use add-ons). - The freezing appeared anytime I used thunderbird, even when it is the only software I run, so I do not think it can be related with a conflict involving another software.
I will check what I can do for the hardware acceleration, and keep in touch if anything new happens.
