Firefox now crashes for unknown reasons, it worked fine with new computer installed with windows8 for about 2 months then out of nowhere it started crashing with every new web search, now adobe flash has crashed so I have removed Firefox from my computer. I have searched your website for answers none of them address the issue at hand. I have Norton's security but it also worked fine with Firefox for two months so nothing has changed all updates are current and still Firefox no longer works. this is sad because it was one of the best web browsers avail. but not anymore

There is a problem on Windows 8 with Firefox 19 and AMD Radeon HD 6XXX/7XXX graphic display cards.

This issue is currently being investigated in bug 830531.

  • Bug 830531 - [Win8] crash in XPC_WN_Helper_NewResolve mainly with AMD Radeon HD 6290/6310/6320/7290/7310/7340

If you have one of those display cards then best is to stay with or downgrade to Firefox 18.0.2 for now.

It's possible that deleting your firefox profile and creating a new one would help. Of course, your profile contains all your history, bookmarks, passwords, cache, etc. so only delete if you know that this information is not important or available via something like Firefox Sync.

It may not solve your immediate problem but your Firefox will run better without your Ask toolbar.

Thanks for all your reply's, but I have tried everything. I never had ask tool bar installed to begin with, so that was never a conflict. I have reset Firefox, I have started Firefox in safe mode, I have reinstalled Firefox and all suggested solutions still lead to the eventual crashing of Firefox which results in frequent crash's to where I can no longer Google search for anything and eventually it leads to a permanent crash of adobe flash, in which I was forced to delete Firefox several times and reinstall. I have updated adobe flash player, I have updated hardware graphics accelerator, and deselected hardware accelerator in Firefox. I have ran Norton for virus spyware etc. I have done everything to try to make the Firefox software work again.

I do not think there is an answer here. Except the one I haven't tried is downloading a older version of Firefox. Unfortunately Firefox does not support older versions due to security reasons and only third parties offer it. I do not want to be plagued by spyware from downloading it form another party. Unless Firefox decides that it is a major issue for some of us and corrects the conflicts it will never be useable. This is very sad because I already hate using internet explorer and chrome, but I will be forced to get use to them and eventually forget about Firefox.

Have you tried deleting your profile? Uninstalling and reinstalling doesn't do this for you, so you could be continually using files which are causing issues.

yes i have just done just that, deleted my user profile and uninstalled Firefox and reinstalled Firefox and now it crashes the entire computer after a few web searches...it is simply not compatible with windows 8, what ever the developers did with latest version totally made Firefox unusable with this computer. too sad for words, thanks for all your suggestions but its NOT fixable at this level. I highly recommend Firefox, despite security issues, have a web page that contains earlier versions of Firefox that might work.

until then BYE BYE Firefox.

I have regularly used both firefox beta and Firefox aurora on a windows 8 system over the past week without any problems. the problem you are describing is likely caused by something not yet pinpointed. if you have been able to remove all files related to Firefox and then reinstall and you still have the same issue, then very likely the issue is with some component outside of Firefox on your system that isnt the default configuration other people use.

I have followed Cor-els advice, it seems to be working fine..so far. (fingers crossed) It is true that i have both windows 8 and the AMD video card and that might explained why an earlier version worked fine till the update of Firefox when all hell broke loose.

But i must remind everyone that uses the downgrade option to first go to Firefox Options; advance, update, and deselect automatic updates or else the older version that you just installed will immediately begin to update to 19. and you will have the same crashes all over again.

basically after a few tries i realized that before I downloaded the older version, that i had to deselect automatic updates in the Firefox options.

Anyone with crashes it is best to check your crash IDs either yourself, or by posting it into a question. Look at the related bugs to see if that is the cause of your crash.

If Bug 830531 is listed, the current advice is to downgrade to Fx18.0.2
