TB 31.3.0 crashes when deleting emails

I am running (or rather trying to run) TB 31.3.0 on my new Win 8.1 computer. Every time I try to delete a message TB crashes. Antivirus is AVG Free 2015. I'm really new to Win 8.1 so need someone to talk me through any modifications to software and/or operating system.

How do I stop the crashing please?

2. Does crash stop if you Start *Windows'* safe mode with networking enabled - win8 http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/windows-startup-settings-safe-mode Still In Windows safe mode, start thunderbird in safe mode - http://support.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/kb/safe-mode

Does problem go away?
