Since I set up Thunderbird on my new computer a few weeks ago I've had to switch "Sort by" back to threaded view every few days. This never happened on other computers I've owned over the decades.

My best guess is that I'm missing something in the preferences or account settings but I'm not finding it in the menus or in the support forum.

did you perhaps install ccCleaner on your new computer? Or a new anti virus that might be scanning the profile folder.

That information is stored per folder, and only failed shut downs end in a crash or file corruption would see those tings changing at random periodically. Windows is more than capable of dragging a copy of a file from the shadow copies it makes if it is damaged to the point of not reading correctly and this could be what is happening. Does the new device have a spinning disk or a solid state drive? (Spinning disks particularly have a habit of failing very early in their life or lasting almost forever, so when they tell you the mean time between failures is 3 years they really mean 30 days and 5 years, with almost no failures in the middle.

Thanks, Matt. I don't know ccCleaner and it isn't listed in Control Panel/Programs (Windows 10). No crashes so far, knock on wood. My storage is SSD. As far as I can tell, no "event" has occurred when I discover that my inbox sort is no longer threaded.

More details: no other folder switches to unthreaded AFAIK, just my inbox. I usually empty my inbox regularly except for one or two emails that require action, so the problem shows up only after more emails have arrived. (This is what I've always done, without problems until now.)
