How can I stop Firefox from asking me over and over (even on pages with no flash content) to install Flash? I don't want Flash installed and this stupid pop-up.

So even when I load up websites (like ones we here at my job have created) with very simple HTML and absolutely nothing Flash related, I still get a pop-up asking me to install flash (pops down from the URL bar at left.) How can I stop this without disabling all plug-in updates?

Moreover, why in the name of all that's good is it asking me about Flash when I have no pages open with anything remotely Flash like on them?

Thanks to anyone who can answer.

my thought was that maybe an extension is inserting some flash code into every visited page...

I do not see why this should happen because of Firefox. Maybe you have some sort of adware on your system.

Please attach a screenshot of the popup

Try Firefoxin safe mode to rule out your standard extensions. if that does not solve the problem then scan for malware with multiple and up-to-date tools.

Sometimes a problem with Firefox may be a result of malware installed on your computer, that you may not be aware of.

You can try these free programs to scan for malware, which work with your existing antivirus software:

Microsoft Security Essentials is a good permanent antivirus for Windows 7/Vista/XP if you don't already have one.

Further information can be found in the Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware article.

John,

Thanks for your reply, I am attaching a screenshot of a Firefox showing a company Intranet page (with some details blurred.) I use this page as an example because the programmer who wrote the code behind it sits next to me, and of course though she assures me there is no flash on the page, I checked the source myself (I too am a programmer of 20+ years.)

Now we have Company anti-virus here (Symantec) and my system has actually been recently swept for malware (due to a more general problem, not my system.)

So, while nothing is 100%, I am pretty darned sure that: A.) There is no flash object in the code on the page in question (actually 100% on this one.) B.) There is no malware/adware on my system.

Typically, of course I usually would tinker and solve this type of problem myself, or get a colleague to help, but in this case I come to the forums because we are baffled.

Thank you for any support you can give.

Scott

does the same thing happen when you launch firefox in safe mode once?

philipp,

Interestingly, the behavior does not seem to occur (4 restarts to test just now) when restarting in safe mode.

Regards,

Scott.

Phillip,

Turns out it was a plug-in, specifically AniWeather 08.037. Feeling dumb now.

Thanks for the slap. :D
