Firefox crashes when I open it (except in safe mode). Reinstalled it twice, didn't help. Also shut off hardware accelleration etc. Windows XP, Firefox 6.

Whenever I try to open Firefox, it crashes and won't open. Keep getting the crash reporter. I uninstalled and reinstalled twice but it didn't help. Followed instructions on your site for disabling add-ons and turning off hardware accerlation. Firefox doesn't crash in Safe Mode. I'm using the latest version of Firefox with Windows XP. Thanks

Chosen solution

Your Malware undetectable by most anti-malware programs (because randomly named) is still present and has other hidden symptoms.

If this Malware is a Rookit, try this free Kapersky's tool.

Check and tell if its working.

You show 4 extensions installed and enabled, have you tried disabling them?

I disablled all themes, add-ons and extensions, unchecked accelleration, reinstalled Firefox twice, disabled javascript, reset everything back to the original defaults, and ran both McAfee and Malwarebytes. I went to the mozilla faq and did everything it said.

Every time I go back to do something new, I have to uncheck all that again, so maybe that's why that's showing up, I don't know....I'm about ready to give up, guys. I'm using Slimbrowser and it works just fine.

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.

See Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile:

There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins" in case there are still problems.

If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files

I marked the solution posted by mha007 about using Kapersky's tool as solving it.

P.S. (For the record) The crash report at https://crash-stats.mozilla.com/report/index/bp-50e38523-4322-4935-ba61-fb1652110921 did show it was malware-related and linked to a bug report. From the crash report:

Firefox 6.0.2 Crash Report [@ nsSimpleURI::SchemeIs(char const*, int*) ]
ID: 50e38523-4322-4935-ba61-fb1652110921
Signature: nsSimpleURI::SchemeIs(char const*, int*)
670542 VERIFIED FIXED Crash in nsStandardURL::SchemeIs or nsSimpleURI::SchemeIs mainly close to startup, mainly with a random .cpl or .dll filename in stack (malware-related)

(Bug 670542 shows it was fixed in Firefox 7, in that the Firefox no longer crashes)
