When I start up Firefox, my home page is a small square (3 inches square) showing a portion of my home page. When I try to expand the area (i.e. I hit the green button) it takes up the entire screen but I do not have access to the tool bar above the screen. Nothing I do seems to clear this up. I tried taking a screen shot of both screens but I got a message that the screen shot was too large. I don't know if there is a way to get around that or if my problem is common enough that someone can figure out what is happening. Help please!!

Valittu ratkaisu

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration or userChrome.css is causing the problem.

  • switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Themes
  • do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Safe Mode start window

I followed all the steps recommended - operate in safe mode, download a new version of Firefox, uninstall existing version, install new version, disable all extensions, disable hardware acceleration, etc. - and the problem still exists, sort of. Instead of getting a small box when I start Firefox, I get a half screen containing a generic version of My Yahoo but no apparent way to get to my personalized version (i.e., no log in) and if I hit the green button at the top left, the screen expands but my tool bar disappears (so no access to bookmarks, etc.) and the only way out is to close that screen which turns off Firefox. Better but problem not solved. Help please.

Forgot to mention: The first thing I did this morning was to run Malwarebytes to see if it found any malware. Scan was clean.

Oops! I just figured out how to get to my personalized home page. My Firefox screen covers about 60% (horizontally) of my screen and I think it previously covered more.
