I've never seen that shield myself...

But you should not need to use compatibility mode for Firefox on Windows. Did you run the test because of some problems you were having with Firefox? If you describe those in more detail, perhaps we can help you resolve those issues.

Which version of Windows do you actually have? Your Firefox identified itself as running on Windows XP.

thanks for the answer. i ran it because my firefox keeps telling me that my plug ins for shockwave are stopped and then what has been happening lots all of a sudden firefox quits nresponding all together and i have to reboot. i am not tech savy so i was kinda trying anything that sounded like it could help. and since doing that, now everytime i start firefox, it asks me if i want to allow it to make changes to the computer. like when you download or update an appliation...the windows that came with my little asus netbook was windows 7 but i do all the updates when i get them. any help would be most appreciated.

Let's start by turning off the compatibility option. You can right-click your Firefox desktop shortcut, then click Properties, then select the Compatibility tab. Here you can uncheck the box for Windows XP so Firefox runs with the full capability of Windows 7.

Next, this is some standard guidance that addresses the most common issues with the Flash Player plugin. I'm sure you've seen some of it before, but just in case:

(1) If you have any recorders/downloaders that interact with Flash media make sure they are as up-to-date as possible, or disable them temporarily.

(2) Disable hardware acceleration in Flash: right-click the media in the player and choose Settings, then the first mini-tab and uncheck the box to use hardware acceleration.

(3) Disable protected mode (Windows Vista and higher)

The protected mode feature of the Flash player plugin has security benefits, but seems to have compatibility issues on some systems. You can disable it using the Add-ons page. Either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Plugins. On the right side, find "Shockwave Flash" and click the More link. Then uncheck the box for "Enable Adobe Flash protected mode" and try that for a day to see whether it helps.
