Thunderbird 38.6.0 not downloading Gmail on new computer, but working fine on old one. Settings all look the same.

Bought a new (to me) computer and installed Thunderbird (38.6.0). On my "old" laptop, I used to use several folders in Gmail, and at the end of the day download all mail through POP onto the laptop's Thunderbird account. Then I would delete off Gmail. No matter what Gmail file I put it into, *all* new mail would download at the end of the day.

With the new laptop, all the settings look identical, but I can't get it to download new messages some of the time, and it definitely isn't downloading messages I either read, answered or moved out of the Inbox in the gmail web app.

What could be different - I'm running the two laptops next to one another with theoretically identical versions of Thunderbird and one is working to download things (read, unread, not in the Inbox, in the Inbox, etc., as long as it's "new" to thunderbird) and the other is picking and choosing everything it's downloading. And missing probably 2/3.

I don't understand the technical side of how POP servers work, though some other people in this forum do and they may be able to help you more. My comment is just to say that POP was designed and works best when a single client computer is dealing with the account. When you have two or more clients working with the same account the usual advice is to switch to IMAP because it's designed for that situation. Do you have a particular reason for staying with POP?
