Message accidentally deleted also marked as read

I accidentally deleted a message when I deleted another message I had just read (Delete was pressed twice). I looked for that message in the deleted folder but could not find any unread messages. I did find it, but it was marked as read.

I have the options set to auto flag messages as read after reading it for 5 seconds. But the deleted message was only seen for 1/2 a second. Why was that message flagged as read?

Solution choisie

Messages that are deleted are automatically marked as read, and in Tbird there is no way to turn that off. I took to moving messages that I no longer wanted to the trash with the File button, since I did not appreciate that behaviour. Moving things with the file button does not change their status.
