I switched from opera mail to thunderbird. In opera mail you can configer that after downloading all mail from the inbox on the mailserver to the local inbox on my computer, all mail in the inbox of the mailserver will be deleted. The mail in my local inbox on my computer will not be deleted. Where can I find this setting in thunderbird?

Are you using POP or I MAP email? If you cannot find it my guess is IMAP.

I use IMAP email.

IMAP is server based email. The messages stay on the server and you just remotely view them with email clients like Thunderbird. To keep a local copy you need to make folders under Local Folders and move copies of the message there before removing from the server. If you remove from the server without doing that the messages will be gone. I suggest you educate yourself on the differences between POP and IMAP protocols before you get surprised by the results of your actions.
