Repair the lost URL shortcut icons from Firefox's update to v65.
The question is expository to the problem... Firefox's update did deposit a folder on my desktop, "Old Firefox Data".
It weighs in at 61.4 MB; contains one inserted folder named "edqs18xb.default", as follows:
C:\Users\[user name]\Desktop\Old Firefox Data\edqs18xb.default\
These folders (sans contents... but can be supplied if necessary):
adblockplus\ bookmarkbackups\ browser-extension-data\ crashes\ datareporting\ extensions\ features\ gmp\ gmp-eme-adobe\ gmp-gmpopenh264\ gmp-widevinecdm\ healthreport\ jetpack\ minidumps\ saved-telemetry-pings\ storage\ weave\ webapps\ Yahoo Inc\
and these items:
addons.json addonStartup.json.lz4 AlternateServices.txt autofill-profiles.json blocklist-addons.json blocklist-gfx.json blocklist-plugins.json blocklist.xml broadcast-listeners.json cert8.db cert9.db cert_override.txt compatibility.ini containers.json content-prefs.sqlite cookies.sqlite dh-ldata.json enumerate_devices.txt extension-settings.json extensions.json favicons.sqlite flashctrl.sqlite formhistory.sqlite handlers.json key4.db memory-report.json.gz mimeTypes.rdf notificationstore.json parent.lock permissions.sqlite persdict.dat pkcs11.txt places.sqlite pluginreg.dat prefs.js reading-list.sqlite revocations.txt search-metadata.json search.json search.json.mozlz4 secmod.db SecurityPreloadState.txt serviceworker.txt sessionCheckpoints.json shield-preference-experiments.json shield-recipe-client.json SiteSecurityServiceState.txt storage-sync.sqlite storage.sqlite Telemetry.FailedProfileLocks.txt times.json TRRBlacklist.txt webappsstore.sqlite xulstore.json
All the saved URL shortcuts reverted to a blank white icon. There is a process for selecting an individual icon for each separate icon using the Properties dialog. That is not a viable solution.
Firefox is the default browser - as it has been. There should be a default file-association between Firefox and URL shortcuts - whether that be a Firefox icon or a procedure to utilize web-address icons, such as "Favicons"... Prior to the update, Firefox did enable and maintain Firefox icons for URL shortcuts [created from the Firefox address bar].
Any way any of these files or folders contain the solution to my missing Firefox URL shortcuts?
This is a Windows 10 Pro, 64-bit computer. Firefox has been the 64-bit version for many, many updates without experiencing this problem prior.
Thanks.

When you updated, something may have gone wrong, so the browser created the Old Firefox folder on the desktop. It contains the profile you were using and created a new profile.
Is anything missing from the current profile?
Look on your desktop. Do you see a folder called; Old Firefox? Look inside. Look for the folder with the latest creation date.

Search engine research shows that this is an often asked question through the years through various Firefox updates - going way back...
Not a single answer is appropriate to the problem stated. (Thanks for trying, Google.) Way too many responses from way too many people who naively opine about everything that-it-is-not are populating the search inquiries without correction or editing...
Someone might think it's about time a Firefox coder stepped-up and issued an official correction to this problem which was essentially created by Firefox's bushwhack update routine without regard or safeguards for how the browser was being used when the update routine was triggered from the Firefox server apparatus. Yes?
Thank you for not allowing these persistent annoyances to unnecessarily continue. I have already adjusted Firefox preferences to notify me before an update ensues... We'll see how that works out, but meantime, many people would likely appreciate a solution to the default URL icon problem with Firefox as their default browser.
Thank you.
