I recently visited the Firefox Help Page and got a message that I was not running the latest version, and that my current version may be unsecure. I updated to the latest version manually. However, I then checked my Tools Menu - Options - Advanced - Firefox Options and found that it was set to automatically install Firefox updates. Why did the automatic updating not work? If I had not visited the Help page, I would not have realised that my browser was potentially unsecure.

Auto-update is off until next FF 10.0.1.

Firefox 10.0 is the latest release version of Firefox, until later today when a 10.0.1 patch version is probably going to be released.

This - https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/home - is the page which is loaded from the Help > Help menu item, it contains no information about "not running the latest version". Which page are you seeing that notice?

The page you quote is the one I visited, which alerted me to the fact that my version of Firefox was out of date. Since manually updating to version 10.0 the message has disappeared. However, I can confirm that Firefox recognised that the version of Firefox I was running was out of date and potentially unsecure. As I had automatic updating selected as a default setting, I cannot understand why it did not work.

See my reply to the ed-meister. What I cannot understand is why automatic updating did not kick in earlier, as I had it set by default.

Sorry, just checked that again with a different older version than I was using earlier.

I had never seen that type of message there before, must be a new feature recently added to that page.

No idea why you weren't automatically updated before, but Firefox 10.0 does have changes to the way the updates system works - so hopefully you won't have the same problem in the future.

Thanks for that ed-meister. Hopefully automatic updating will work in future.
