Ever since I updated to Firefox 27, when I click "New Tab" my cursor will spin, and my screen will freeze until a script error comes up. Why is this happening?

Since I updated 2 days ago to Firefox 27, I've noticed that every single time I click 'new tab' my cursor will spin and it will freeze. That is until either a script error comes on or it just unfreezes. I dont understand why this is happening, considering it has never happened before. Is it an error in the new upgrade?. Should I uninstall 27 and go back to 26 for the time being? Please help. Its very annoying when I can click new tab without it freezing up on me.

-Thanks

What script error is showing?

Start Firefox in Safe Mode:

To start fixing Firefox issues, you need to start Firefox in safe mode. In safe mode, all extensions would be temporarily disabled. This would determine whether problem is due to extensions or not.

1.Click on Help Menu in Firefox.

2.Select “restart with add-ons disabled”

3.Firefox would start in safe mode.

4.Again click Help and select Restart with Add-ons Disabled

5.Press Continue

If Firefox opens a new tab fine in Safe Mode, close down Firefox, then re-open it and try disabling extensions one by one to seew hich one is causing the problem.

I've noticed I only have this issue when I used the new tab page, as opposed to just the blank new tab.

But, I did what you told me to, and I didnt have any issues with the new tab page in safe mode. Not sure why. As for my extensions. I only have two that I use and those are Adblock plus, and livejournal hook. I dont think they're they problem.

Could it be my extensions? Should I should use the blank new tab and not bother with the new tab page?

If you didn't have any problems with the new tab page in safe mode, then it's probably one of your extensions. Try disabling Livejournal hook in Firefox (normal mode not SafeMode) close Firefox, then start up again and see if you are able to use the New tab page instead of the blank new tab.

To my knowledge, Adblockplus isn't known to cause any problems but anything's pssible.

In Firefox Safe mode these changes are effective:

  • all extensions are disabled (about:addons)
  • default theme is used (no persona)
  • userChrome.css and userContent.css are ignored (chrome folder)
  • default toolbar layout is used (file: localstore-safe.rdf)
  • Javascript JIT compilers are disabled (prefs: javascript.options.*jit)
  • hardware acceleration is disabled (Options > Advanced > General)
  • plugins are not affected
  • preferences are not affected

Note that your System Details List shows multiple Flash plugins.

  1. Shockwave Flash 12.0 r0
  2. Shockwave Flash 11.3 r300

You can find the installation path of all plugins on the about:plugins page.

You can check the Flash player installation folder for multiple Flash player plugins and remove all (older) version(s) of the plugin (NPSWF32) and (re)install the latest Flash player.

I disabled LJ hook and it made no difference. Just to reiterate, when I use the old "new tab" just the white blank page, its fine. It doesn't freeze. When I click the new tab page, where you can bookmark your most frequent pages, it freezes. Sometimes a script error will pop up, like today the script error was

chrome://browser/content/tabbrowser.xxml:4889

sometimes a script error doesnt even come up, and my cursor just freezes until it stops. My flash is up to date. So I dont think its because of that. All I know is, I was fine before this update and now it freezes. I dont need to use the new tab page at all knowing that it freezes. I'll just use the old one. However, I'd like to figure out the issue just in case.
