Firefox 38 is crashing since a Facebook visit this morning

more options

It worked fine until this morning. My fiancé visited Facebook and it crashed and has been crashing, not responding and running in the background after the close button is used, making the whole system unusable and unstable. It also prevents a proper shutdown of the system and causes Windows 7 to initiate a Check Disk scan upon startup. I've uninstalled and reinstalled it but no use. As soon as Firefox launches all problems reoccur without any user activity when no webpages are loaded. What's worse I don't get much, or any, crashes error messages except the page is not responding or cannot be found, even though, as I stated< I haven't clicked on any address or bookmark.

Will Firefox run if you start it in Firefox's Safe Mode? That's a standard diagnostic tool to deactivate extensions and some advanced features of Firefox. More info: Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode.

If Firefox is not running: Hold down the Shift key when starting Firefox.

If Firefox is running: You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
  • Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

and OK the restart.

Both scenarios: A small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Refresh).

Any improvement?

While in Safe Mode, please check for any suspicious or unrecognized extensions on the Add-ons page. Either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Extensions. Then, if in doubt, remove.

Often a link will appear above at least one disabled extension to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step. Note: Firefox will probably restart normally, not in Safe Mode.
